Streamlining entry points with Azure Front Door

Rationalize domain publishing and certificate lifecycle without interrupting application journeys.

Across an extensive application estate, the founder helped standardize more than 100 domains on Azure Front Door and replace manual certificate handling. Over €40,000 in annual savings were reported on the defined scope.

Case studies

The challenge

Internet-facing applications needed to remain accessible under governance and security requirements. Cloud architecture work involved platform and application teams without disclosing the organization’s structure. With over a hundred domains, manual certificate work and inconsistent entry points become harder to operate safely. Domain names and internal topology are not disclosed.

Reduce certificate operations risk

Manual renewal can lead to outages when certificates expire. The issue extends beyond encryption: each domain needs an operating owner and a sustainable configuration-change path.

Keep control of routing during migration

Front Door consolidation required domain-by-domain checks of DNS, routing, certificates and change ownership rather than moving every entry point at once.

The solution

01

Account for domains and dependencies

Moving more than 100 domains required understanding application ownership and certificate lifecycle. Detailed cutover order and internal dependencies are not disclosed.

02

Converge on Azure Front Door

Azure Front Door served as a rationalized entry point for the affected domains. Microsoft-managed certificates replaced manual handling, with automatic renewal and post-migration behavior checks.

03

Version infrastructure decisions

Terraform was used to version Azure configuration. Versioned changes are easier to review but do not replace traffic-path tests or exception governance.

The outcomes

More than 100 domains migrated

The relevant estate moved to Azure Front Door. Managed certificates replaced manual renewal; no numerical availability improvement is claimed.

Over €40,000 in annual savings

Rationalizing entry points generated more than €40,000 in annual savings on the Azure Front Door scope studied. This is not the overall Azure bill and does not come from WAF investigations.

Lessons learned

Standards simplify operations as well as design

Consolidating entry points helps when ownership, certificate lifecycle and change procedures are clarified too. One unmanaged central configuration can instead concentrate risk.
