A bill without owners
Shared or unlabeled resources make changes hard to explain. Product, project and environment allocation should retain a shared category where attribution would be arbitrary, with a showback rule teams understand.
Make spending understandable and manageable without sacrificing performance or availability.
FinOps connects consumption, use and economic ownership. This page explains the decisions behind it; audits and optimizations for a defined scope are described separately under Services.
YOUR CONTEXT
Shared or unlabeled resources make changes hard to explain. Product, project and environment allocation should retain a shared category where attribution would be arbitrary, with a showback rule teams understand.
Reducing capacity based only on averages can affect latency, peak handling and recovery. Rightsizing must protect service objectives and compare equivalent periods and usage before claiming a gain.
BigQuery queries sometimes scan whole partitions to feed the same dashboards. Joins, intermediate tables and retries also contribute to cost; it is not just a question of the unit price of a slot.
THREE PILLARS
Connect Azure and GCP billing exports, tags, labels, budgets and alerts to those accountable for usage. Distinguish credits, commitments, shared costs and directly controllable spend rather than hiding unknown costs in an artificial allocation.
Inspect usage, peaks, schedules and SLO headroom before changing compute or storage. Scheduled shutdown of a non-production environment should be reversible, with informed owners, exceptions and explicit restarts. Confirm retention before removing orphaned resources.
Measure bytes scanned and latency on representative queries. Partitioning and clustering may help particular filters depending on data distribution; compare on-demand pricing and capacity against workload variability without adding hypothetical gains together.
TECHNICAL DECISIONS
A documented shared line is better than fictitious attribution. Keep unallocated spend visible and revise allocation rules when usage or owners change.
Compare cost per use, latency and availability across consistent periods. Reservations and commitments may not fit variable workloads; a cheaper instance that misses its SLO is not optimized.
Partition filters cut scans only when queries use them effectively. Test clustering, bytes read and response time before selecting capacity reservations or changing the schema.
