Azure Front Door & TLS: plan controlled application exposure

A domain needs to move behind Front Door, but routes, origins and DNS and certificate ownership are not aligned. A premature cutover can make a user journey unavailable.

Configure an authorized pilot domain, verify DNS, routing and TLS, and document the cutover decision without changing the live domain by default.

When to engage?

A domain changes entry point

A Front Door route must reach the right origin without breaking existing paths. Test host headers, routing rules, health probes and application responses on representative journeys.

A certificate blocks the migration

DNS and certificates belong to different teams. Choose the certificate model, validate the domain, verify TLS termination and assign renewal ownership before changing live traffic.

An origin must be replaced

The edge responds but a new origin or particular path fails. Separate DNS, origin health, TLS negotiation and application behavior instead of relying on Front Door status alone.

A three-step engagement

  1. 01

    Map the path

I record DNS entries, hostnames, routes, origins, TLS points and decision owners. I identify dependencies and expected responses for each pilot journey.

  2. 02

    Build and test the pilot

I configure the authorized route and certificate mode, then test domain validation, DNS resolution, TLS negotiation, application responses and unhealthy-origin behavior.

  3. 03

    Prepare cutover

I document gaps, approvers, the DNS sequence, post-change checks and rollback. I perform a production cutover only if it is in the approved mandate.

What you receive

  • Pilot path diagramDomain, routes, origins, TLS termination and DNS and certificate ownership for the agreed scope.
  • Configuration and test resultsPilot settings, routing, origin health and TLS tests, with gaps to resolve before launch.
  • Cutover dossierDNS preparation, application and TLS checks, necessary approvals and rollback, without implying production was changed.

Scope and prerequisites

Pilot prerequisites. An authorized domain or subdomain, origins and test journeys, suitable Front Door and DNS access, certificate ownership and availability constraints. The pilot may remain outside the production domain.

Outside this engagement. No migration of every domain, application rewrite or WAF/403 diagnosis. Production DNS, certificate and origin changes require explicit agreement, a window and rollback.
